Advocacy

How We Advocate

The Appalachian Early Childhood Network is THE advocate for early childhood care and education in Appalachia.

State Advocacy

AECN participates in all state level advocacy events, including Children’s Advocacy Day in Frankfort. During the 2026 Legislative Session, we worked with our partners to advocate for important legislation regarding child care.

As many of you know, Kentucky legislators are really stepping up for the children and families in the Commonwealth!  One hundred and seventy three of the 1293 bills and resolutions filed became law this session. It has been a long and hectic session this year, and the hard work has paid off.  Half of the Kentucky Senate bills were on education, for example. What began even earlier than Child Care Advocacy Day in February, has now been put into law!

KT, along with other advocates for children and families, visited the various legislators in February on Child Care Advocacy Day in Frankfort, as seen in these photos below.  Note the upcoming KYA Blueprint Webinar on House Bill 6 to learn more about how child care and programs serving young children and their families will be impacted.

From the Kentucky Youth Advocates (KYA) Website:

House Bill 6, sponsored by Representative Samara Heavrin and based on the recommendations of the Kentucky Chamber’s Early Childhood Collaborative, establishes stronger child care infrastructure throughout the state for child care centers and family child care homes. ”   Click on the following link to learn more: KYGA26: Bill Breakdown on Kids – Kentucky Youth Advocates

Community Advocacy

AECN has deep roots in Appalachia. Expect to see us in your community, participating in activities that support our families, children, and providers. We are also active on local Chambers of Commerce and community leadership teams.

Family Advocacy

AECN believes families deserve high-quality, affordable child care. We provide resources for those looking for care, and we advocate for increased CCAP eligibility and lower copays for families.
